Kids can cash in on Halloween candy
Local dentists and doctors are hoping kids bite on the candy buy-back this Halloween.

To help prevent kids' pearly whites from decaying, Dr. Edithann Graham has started a program to buy Halloween treats.

"We'll be paying a dollar a pound for your excess Halloween candy and all the candy will be donated to the troops overseas," said Dr. Graham.

On Monday from 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m., people are encouraged to drop off candy at Dr. Graham's Ocean Beach office at 1802 Cable Street.

Dr. Graham said it gives kids a good incentive to keep their teeth and gums healthy. She's not the only office in San Diego participating in the second annual Healthy Kids Choice program.

Pediatrician Dr. Christine Wood with the San Diego County Childhood Obesity Initiative said her office in Encinitas is also offering a buck a pound on November 1st. Families can come by the office located at 477 N. El Camino Real #206 from 2 p.m to 5 p.m.

"Halloween is a special time and we do understand that kids want to enjoy that but I do recognize that over indulgence could be a problem," said Dr. Wood of El Camino Pediatrics. "It's sort of looking at it from a nutritional standpoint; our kids don't need pounds of candy."

Over the last three decades, Dr. Wood said childhood obesity has tripled and this program has helped give kids healthy options.

"There are around 20 dentist and doctor offices participating in the cash for candy program," said Dr. Wood. "We are really excited."
