CHULA VISTA,Calif. -- A young man and woman were shot to death at an apartment complex in Chula Vista early Friday.  Another man was shot in the face, but he was expected to survive, police said.

Police said that the dead man was Hopeton Bennett, 17, of San Diego. Family members told Fox 5 the wounded man was Bennett's brother, Julian Velasquez.  Online posts indicated Velasquez was recovering in a local hospital.

"Young black men, Hispanics getting killed, shot, hurt, jail...for no reason at all," said Melanie, the sister of the two men shot.

The woman was identified as Christina  Elizabeth Selmon, 20, of Chula Vista. Her grandmother said she was studying to become a dancer.

Neighbors reported hearing gunshots  in the 400 block of Oaklawn Avenue just after 3 a.m., according to Chula Vista police.

A man and a woman died at the scene and a 21-year-old man was taken by paramedics to UCSD Medical Center, police said. The man was shot in the face, but police said he was expected to survive.

Police described the victims as juveniles to young adults.

Neighbors told Fox 5 News that they were shocked by the violence.

"Most of the people over her are pretty quiet," one resident said.

"It's just a terrifying thing to think about," another said.

Police believe that the three were shot by gunman who fled the area after the violence.

"It appears as though the suspects did flee. There were two black males seen earlier before the shooting and those same two black males seen fleeing," Chula Vista police Capt. Gary Ficacci said. "We don’t have a whole lot of detail on their description other than what I've just given."

Investigators said police had investigated a disturbance at the apartment late Wednesday night. The details of that incident were not immediately available.
