SAN DIEGO -
Richard Nares has spent thousands of hours in the car, driving miles and miles in honor of his late son.
"We lost our son Emilio to cancer and when we lost him," Nares said. "My wife and I know what families go through and through that experience, we wanted to give back. So we created the Emilio Nares Foundation in order to help families, the way we knew how."
Emilio died just short of his sixth birthday. But his memory lives on every time Richard picks up a child with cancer, along with the parents, and takes them to a doctor's appointment. The foundation provides transportation for patients who don't have it so that they don't miss important treatments - all free of charge. Nares tries to make a difficult time a little easier which is why he was named one of Major League Baseball's "All-Stars Among Us". The campaign recognizes people in the community who do extraordinary things for the community. Richard was chosen to represent San Diego.
"I was overwhelmed and humbled," Nares said. "I mean, we're a little organization and there's great organizations here in San Diego so it was a shock for us to be picked out of everyone."
We took him to meet another potential all-star: Padres closer Heath Bell. The burly righthander expressed what many
"I think it's great," Bell said. "I think it's amazing. We need more people like (Nares)."
Bell then gave Nares a hug, and said he hopes they hug again at the All-Star Game in St. Louis when Nares will be honored with 31 other community All-Stars. On Sunday, Bell will find out if he has earned a trip to St. Louis/
