SAN DIEGO—
Several razor blades have been found hidden in the grass near a children's play area in Mission Beach, Fox 5 San Diego reported. The blades were discovered Friday after a man visiting Mariners Point off Bonita Cove with his two children stepped on one of the blades and cut his foot, police said. Officers closed off the area for several hours while they, along with lifeguards and city workers, combed the area with metal detectors, the Union- Tribune reported. It was not clear how many blades were found.
"We believe they were deliberately placed there,'' San Diego police Capt. Shelley Zimmerman told The San Diego Union- Tribune. "We were very fortunate because it could have been a lot worse.''
Investigators believe it was an isolated incident, according to the Union-Tribune.
Similar incidents have occurred from time to time in Southern California. In San Diego, a woman suffered a slashed foot when she stepped on one of several razor blades embedded, apparently as a booby trap of sorts, in a lawn at a Golden Hill Community Park on Aug. 8, 2006.
San Diego police said at the time that the victim was at the recreation area at Cedar and 28th Streets with her husband and child when she trod, barefoot, on the blade. She was not serious hurt. Investigators later found a total of 10 blades in the area, some inserted into the ground, sharp side up.
