Busby wants answers answers from Sheriff Gore
KEARNY MESA, CA -
Congressional Candidate Francine Busby makes a visit to the San Diego Sheriff's headquarters in Kearny Mesa to congratulate newly-sworn Sheriff Bill Gore. She also tells him he can expect her to cooperate in the investigation involving a sheriff's deputy use of force at a campaign fundraiser last Friday.
"It's important to them and as well as the public," Busby said.
Busby calls the altercation "regrettable" and wants answers from Sheriff Gore.
"They indicated that they regret everyone involved that this occurred. They would do their very best to find out what happened," Busby said.
The controversy stems from an altercation involving Deputy Marshall Abbott and guests at a campaign fundraiser. The event was held for Busby last Friday at a home in Cardiff-by-the-Sea. Busby supporter and hostess of the party, Shari Barman, was arrested for battery on a peace officer.
"They were talking, there was no physical contact. no raised voices. It seemed that it could have been handled differently," Busby said.
Busby isn't calling Deputy Abbott's action unnecessary force. But earlier this week, another party guest and witness, Julie Chippendale, is quick to point that out.
"He had a wildness to him, like he wasn't in control," Chippendale said.
The controversial altercation has caught the attention of the American Civil Liberties Union, ACLU. Executive Director, Kevin Keenan, feels First and Fourth Amendment rights were violated.
"Our concern is that the deputy didn't have the right to enter the home, didn't have a good reason to enter the home and use unnecessary force," Keenan said.
Keenan doesn't believe the sheriff's department internal affairs investigation will be fair. He's calling for an independent party to step in, but not the District Attorney's office.
"We haven't found the District Attorney's office will find a much different perspective than the local law enforcement agency," Keenan said.
Meanwhile, Busby wants to give the sheriff's department the benefit of the doubt to conduct a thorough investigation.
"The public has to have their full trust in their law enforcement," Busby said.
Busby feels the nature of the call was politically-motivated. According to Busby, a caller informed the sheriff's department there was a "Democratic demonstration" or "rally" was taking place.
Another guest, 62-year-old Pam Morgan was also arrested on the night of the party. The District Attorney's office will review the Sheriff's Department investigation to determine if charges are warranted against 60-year-old Barman and Morgan.
