Chula Vista police arrested a man Sunday in a fatal hit-and-run.

A 54-year-old woman crossing the 1200 block of Third Avenue was fatally struck about 8:30 p.m. Saturday, and Chula Vista police tracked down and arrested 23-year-old Angel Gutierrez early today, according to Lt. Eric Thunberg.

A witness provided police with a partial license on the white Pontiac sedan that struck the woman, and police found it abandoned in the 200 block of Moss Street about an hour later, he said.

Investigators went to the registered owner's address, questioned Gutierrez's relatives, then picked him up about 2:40 a.m. outside his home in the 300 block of Date Street, he said. Gutierrez initially told police he was not driving and had loaned his car to a "homeboy," Thunberg said.

The name of the fatally struck woman was being withheld. Police said she was believed to be a transient.

Gutierrez was booked on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter. Results of a blood-alcohol were not made available.

The dead woman's name is being withheld pending notification of her next of kin, according to the Medical Examiner's Office.
