RAMONA, Calif -
According to the American Heart Association. Effective bystander (CPR), given immediately after sudden cardiac arrest, can double or triple a victim's chance of survival.
Over the past week there have been two cases that have driven home the importance of knowing CPR. The death of Michael Jackson, and the local surfer who became unconscience in the water and needed CPR.
"Situations pop up anywhere and anytime. Knowing the proper way to do CPR saves lives. Time is very critical. CPR helps blood flow to the heart and brain." said Cal Fire Paramedic Shawn Warcup. According to the American Red Cross 1.25 million people in the U.S. experience a heart attack each year. 500,000 of those attacks result in death.
The way CPR is performed plays a vital role in the survival of the victim. "Compressions are pretty relevant. Thirty compressions to every two breaths. Keep your skills fresh. Learn CPR or look into taking a CPR refresher course once a year." said Warcup.
