Pendleton fire claims 100 acres

CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. - A training exercise on the Camp Pendleton base caused a brush fire to spark Thursday evening, according to base officials.

A California Highway Patrol dispatcher told Fox 5 that the fire was two to three miles east of Interstate 5, south of Las Pulgas Road.

The fire broke out around 6:20 p.m. and was climbing up steep terrain in heavy vegetation, according to Bill Gick, fire inspector for the Camp Pendleton Fire Department.

The cause of the fire was related to troops training on base, Gick said.
