ESCONDIDO, Calif. -- A passer-by found the body of a woman, who possibly is a homicide victim, on a rural North County road Wednesday afternoon.
The discovery in the 28000 block of Lawrence Welk Court in the Escondido area was reported shortly before 2 p.m, sheriff's Lt. Jeff Maxin said.
The man who discovered the body did not want to be indentified but said at first, he thought it was strange didn't think anything was wrong.
"As I was approaching the pavement, I saw what looked like a pile of blankets or debris or laundry," he said. "As I got closer, I realized it was probably somebody sleeping in a sleeping bag and right at the point where I was next to it, I could tell that it was somebody laying face down in the dirt," he added.
He said the woman's hair appeared to be dark brown or red in color, and guessed that she might be in her 20's because of the way her hands looked.
"Her hands were out so she had either tried to crawl up on to the road or there had been some disturbance in the dirt there," he said. "Who knows what that could have been, but I believe the sheriff's found some foot prints in the area,"
Due to the apparent circumstances of the death, homicide detectives were summoned to investigate, according to Maxin. The lieutenant said he had no further details pending updates from investigators in the field.
San Marcos Sheriff's Station, Sheriff's Homicide Unit, and U.S. Border Patrol are participating in the investigation.
A cause and manner of death, as well as identity of the decedent will be determined by the Medical Examiner’s Office.
