78 jailed during sex offender sweep

Scores of people were jailed in San Diego County this week as part of a statewide crackdown on registered sex offenders violating parole conditions.

Personnel with an array of local, state and federal law enforcement agencies made the 78 arrests while checking on 417 registrants between Monday and Thursday evening, according to the San Diego Sexual Assault Felony Enforcement Task Force.

Most were jailed for parole or probation violations, SAFE Cmdr. David Collazo said. Several were caught with child pornography, and almost two dozen had drugs in their possession, he said. All the suspects surrendered peacefully.

Ten offenders were absent from the addresses where they were supposed to be living, according to Collazo. Law enforcement agencies will be on the lookout for those fugitives, he said.

Statewide, 417 registrants were taken into custody during the sweep, dubbed "Operation Safe Playground.''
