DEL MAR, Calif., -
The theme for the fair was "Music Mania." And it ended as such. American Idol's first winner, Kelly Clarkson was the last major act to end the fair. However, since the death of Michael Jackson, many fair-goers were wondering if there would be an MJ tribute. They got that wish Sunday night. A band called, "Who's bad: The world's number one tribute band to Michael Jackson," took over the fair's Paddock stage.
"After we announced it, we got lots of calls to our switchboard. And I was receiving calls, people wanting to know when, and what time," said fair spokesperon Linda Zweig.
The death of Jackson brought hundreds of fans to see the concert. Some were hoping to see his memorial in Los Angeles on Tuesday. "I watched his videos, I listened to his music. Oh my God. He's a wonderful man," said Jackson fan, Marcos Reyes. I wish I can go, but I'll see him when I'm done," he said.
In meantime, the last day of the fair meant the last day for fair-goers to ride, play, and most importantly, eat. Serena Martin of El Cajon spent her last day at the fair eating a chocolate-covered funnel cake and chocolate covered bacon. "It tasted similar to chocolate-covered pretzels," she said.
Fair officials say attendance at the fair will match, if not surpass, last year's number of 1.2 million people. "We hope so very much. It looks that way, but we won't know until the gates close tonight," said Zweig.
Fair officials won't know official attendance numbers until next week.
