One man was killed, a second was badly injured in a head-on motorcycle crash.

A sailor died when he apparently tried to pass another group of motocyclists and crashed head-on into an oncoming Harley Davidson.

CHULA VISTA, Calif. -- A 22-year-old active duty sailor was killed in a head-on crash between two motorcycles in Otay Mesa over the weekend, according to the county's coroner's office.

The sailor was riding a Yamaha R1 westbound on Otay Lakes Road, west of the Otay Glider Port, when his bike collided with an eastbound Harley Davidson motorcycle at about 10:50 a.m. on Sunday, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office.

The sailor crossed into the oncoming lane in an attempt to pass a group of motorcyclists, the Medical Examiner's Office reported. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:14 a.m.

Authorities withheld his name until family could be notified.

The other motorcyclist suffered arm and leg fractures and was flown to Sharp Memorial Hospital, Cal Fire Battalion Chief Nick Schuler said. His condition was unavailable Monday morning.

Otay Lakes Rd. is a popular stretch of highway with motorcycle riders. The road was shut down for several hours a paramedics attended the injured man and police investigated the accident.
