a fire in Del Mar (August 2, 2009)
DEL MAR, Calif., -
Several families are without a home, and one person was injured from a condo fire in Del Mar, late Friday night.
Firecrews from Encinitas, Carlsbad, Rancho Santa Fe, Del Mar, and Solana Beach responded to the three alarm fire. It happened shortly before midnight off Dolphin Cove Court. Fire crews said it took about 45 minutes to completely douse the flames, that eventually damaged six units.
"When they arrived on scene, they had all three floors of a multi-family dwelling going," said Batallion Chief, Fred Cox of the Rancho Santa Fe Fire Department.
The sheriff's department is categorizing the fire as accidental, possibly caused by an unattended candle.
Neighbor Gerry Pollak, who owns a home about 100 feet from the burned complex was one of the first to call 911. She said the fast response from firefighters prevented the fire from spreading.
"They were here pretty fast. Thank goodness, because if they weren't, I don't know what would've happened with all this trees and foiliage and the house next door," said Pollak.
The lone victim, described by neighbors as an elderly man in his 70's, was taken to UCSD Burn Center for what authorities described as burns to 13% of his body. A neighbor also told Fox 5 that residents in the unit just above the elderly man's, pulled him out of the fire.
General contractors remained at the scene until late Saturday night. The estimated cost of damage is estimated to be about $4 million dollars.
