SAN DIEGO—
About 150 loud but peaceful demonstrators gathered in front of the Federal Courthouse in downtown San Diego to protest an Arizona law cracking down on illegal immigrants. The new law, Senate Bill 1070, makes it a crime not to carry immigration documents or proof of citizenship in the state and requires police to question people about their immigration status if they suspect they are there illegally.
Opponents of the law chanted, "Shame on Arizona," during the 90 minute rally.
"It's a racist law, and it's sending the United States decades back for separating people on the basis of their skin color," said protester Carl Manaster.
Those opposing the law say it will lead to racial profiling.
"Professionals will not be able to tell illegal immigrants by their shoes or their clothing. That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. That is racial profiling," said protestor Leigh Mahon.
A few supporters of the law also congregated near the courthouse. They say the law will protect citizens from crimes committed by illegal immigrants. An estimated 500,000 illegal immigrants live in Arizona.
"Cleary the gangs are here, people are being kidnapped and ranchers are getting shot at the border. That is why we have to ask them not to come anymore. They need to go home, stand at the end of the line, learn English and come here honorably," said Lock David Crane.
Crane stood next to the protestors holding an American flag and a sign protesting illegal immigration.
