Pedestrian Hit by Trolley in La Mesa (February 21, 2012)

LA MESA -- Trolley traffic on the Orange Line was closed for about 20 minutes Tuesday morning when a teenage boy became trapped underneath a light rail train, a rescue dispatcher said.

The accident happened at the trolley station at La Mesa Boulevard and Spring Street shortly before 11 a.m. Witnesses told Fox 5 News that the boy tried to run across the tracks in front of a moving trolley and tripped on the tracks.

The 17-year-old boy was still alive when rescuers pulled himfrom under the train. He was taken by ambulance to Sharp Memorial Hospital, where he was admitted in critical condition, Heartland Fire and Rescue spokesman Sonny Saghera said.

Trolley service on the Orange Line was halted until about 11:20 a.m. when the accident scene was cleared, according to the Metropolitan Transit System.
