SAN DIEGO - A teenager who was struck by a train while walking along railroad tracks north of Sorrento Valley was hospitalized Monday afternoon.

A northbound AMTRAK train was traveling 45 mph when it hit 18-year-old Luis Cortez at 3:05 p.m., San Diego Sheriff's Sgt. T.C. Yancey said.

The train immediately stopped, and AMTRAK workers said Cortez did not appear to be seriously injured and was able to get on the train without assistance, Yancey said.  Officials decided to transport Cortez to the Solana Beach Station as it would be the fastest way to get him the medical care he needed, the sergeant added.

An ambulance then took Cortez to Scripps Hospital in La Jolla to be treated for his injuries, according to Yancey.
