When they arrived, the man was outside the home, but he went inside when he saw officers, police said. Two officers followed him inside. The next time they saw the man, he was holding a knife. He refused to drop the weapon when the officers told him to and told officers they would have to kill him, according to Rooney. One of the officers shot the man as he approached.

Police did not identify the officer who shot the man, but they said he had been placed on routine administrative leave pending an investigation.
