CORONADO, Calif. - A new workout trend is gaining in popularity across San Diego and involves doing yoga on the ocean.

Katherine Alfredo teaches a stand-up paddle board yoga class off the coast of Coronado.

“Doing yoga on a mat is one thing but when you create an unstable surface, like doing it on a paddle board, you're firing way more muscles to stabilize,” said Alfredo. “So like a down dog if you've been doing it for years and years, all the sudden becomes a more challenging pose all over again.”

Ryan Glidden said the experience was refreshing and offered a freedom.

“A lot of people are scared to do inversions because if they fall they're going to hit the ground  which is uncomfortable," said Glidden.  "Out here, you almost want to fall because you get to take a dunk and you jump into the water.”

Alfredo said anybody can do it, just as long as you’re able to swim.  She also offers life jackets.

“It's definitely different than being in a studio because you have the natural elements around you,” she said. “You have a dolphin swimming up to you or a seal or a pelican diving for fish and it just really connects you with nature  and your breath, the sound of the waves is just like you're breath.”

Alfredo offers sunset evening classes on Wednesdays.  She frequently has beginners join the class. For more information on the classes call 619-327-yoga.
