San Marcos, Calif. - The pilot of an experimental, single-engine plane made a safe landing down the traffic lanes of West San Marcos Boulevard today, causing no injuries or damage, authorities said.

The pilot, William David Leonard of Oceanside, told a news agency he was flying from Oceanside Airport to McClellan-Palomar Airport in Carlsbad when the engine quit. He glided to a landing about 9:30 a.m., going west in eastbound lanes of the divided road west of Rancho Santa Fe Road.

Leonard was taking his home-built, single-seat small plane, with a Mazda rotary engine, on a short pleasure flight, he told Bay News Video. About three miles east of the Carlsbad airport, on approach to land, the engine stopped.

Leonard landed safely, avoiding any motorists. The plane's wingspan was within the roadway's two lanes and caused no damage to traffic lights or trees along the way. The nearest homes lie atop a ridge above the road.

Sheriff's deputies controlled traffic until a tow truck arrived to take the plane to McClellan-Palomar Airport.
