CARLSBAD, Calif. - Some San Diego medical marijuana dispensaries are taking their business to the streets.

An owner of a Carlsbad dispensary, who goes by 'Lou', reports that these types of delivery services are a growing trend in the North County. He serves nearly 200 patients in the North County area.

Lou claims he's running a legal operation by checking doctor's recommendations, taking orders, and delivering less than the legal 8 ounce amount to each patient.

"It's a good way to be involved in this business and yet still keep some anonymity," he said.

So far, he's had an easy run with his delivery services, but says there's a danger to delivery because one can't be sure that the patient is not out to rob the seller for the "prescription."

"You have to make judgment calls," warns Lou. "You have to be smart."

Some dispensaries are trying to catch the attention of their patients by advertising with the ever-popular sign spinners.

A sign in Carlsbad Village held by a young man named David Dean advertised a medical marijuana company called San Diego North County Delivery.

Dean explained how the company hired him, "I was spinning signs for another company at the time, and the guy that own this company came up to me and where like 'Hey, I like what you're doing, you wanna spin signs for us?'"

The irony with the growing delivery business is that these sellers don't want the controversial marijuana plant to be legalized. Medical marijuana sellers say that if the drug was legalized, it would certainly hurt their small business.

Lou says he and his partners are concerned, "We're going to try to roll with the times and roll with the punches, that's all we can do."

Lou pointed out that a store front for a dispensary makes the business a target for local law enforcement.

A sweep by law enforcement last September shut down 14 medicinal marijuana shops throughout San Diego County. Two of those shops were in northern San Diego county.

Lou mentioned, "I have a tax ID and an IEN number for my corporation, and I have a seller's permit, but I don't have the appropriate business license from the municipality because they won't issue one to businesses like mine."
