As devastation and the death toll rises, San Diego military are aiding in rescue and relief efforts in Haiti.

Military officials say the Caribbean Island will be getting help from San Diego based sailors.

"We're moving U.S.S. Carl Vinson from Norfolk to the vicinity," explains General Douglas Fraser, Commander of the U.S. Southern Command.

Nearly 3000 sailors aboard the aircraft carrier are expected to port in Haiti sometime Thursday.

The ship was moving towards its new homeport of San Diego, when they were re-routed to help with humanitarian efforts.

Military officials have not said when the ship will return to San Diego.

Meantime, Scott Sabin executive director of local non-profit Plant with Purpose is hoping to return to Haiti. His organization is committed to long term development there.

His 40 Haitian staff members are accounted for, but much of his life's work is likely ruined. Sabin is anxious to help re-build, "I have been incredibly impressed with the resilience and perseverance of the people there."

HOW YOU CAN HELP: The Salvation Army is mobilizing personnel and resources to send to Haiti in response to the earthquake. Monetary donations are the most critical need as supplies and personnel are gathered and shipped.
