SAN DIEGO -
A prisoner en route to county jail this afternoon kicked out the back window of a squad car on a Park West-area roadway, jumped out and fled into a nearby high-rise hotel, where he ran through the building and climbed between balconies before being re-arrested.
The suspect -- his name and the charges he was facing were not immediately available -- broke out of the El Cajon Police Department cruiser near the Front Street offramp from southbound Interstate 5 in San Diego about 3:45 p.m., SDPD spokesman Gary Hassen said.
Though an officer shot him several times with an electric stun gun, the escapee, still in handcuffs, managed to get away, running into the 22-story Doubletree hotel in the 1600 block of Front Street, Hassen said.
The California Highway Patrol closed the freeway exit while officers searched for the escapee.
The suspect scurried between floors of the hotel, reaching as high as the 14th story at one point, lowered himself from terrace to terrace several times and eventually forced his way into a room, according to police.
Officers caught up with him and took him into custody about 4:30 p.m., Hassen said.
Medics treated the prisoner for some type of arm injuries following the chase and took him away in an ambulance.
