SAN DIEGO -- A SWAT team stormed a Navy family's Serra Mesa home Wednesday to end a three-hour standoff with a domestic-shooting suspect, finding a man and his wife dead in an apparent case of murder-suicide.

Along with the couple's bodies, the heavily armed and armored officers found an unharmed toddler in the house in the 3300 block of Wainright Lane when they made entry about 3:30 p.m., according to San Diego police.

The 18-month-old boy was in the home when his 36-year-old father apparently killed his 26-year-old wife, then himself, according to San Diego police. Both were in the U.S. Navy.

A sibling, a girl of about 5, was at school, said Lt. Andra Brown, a department spokeswoman.

The names of the deceased were withheld pending family notification. They lived in military housing.

The man called authorities early Wednesday afternoon to report he had shot his wife and intended to kill himself, Brown said.

The first officer to arrive at the address saw the woman apparently trying to leave the home and being pulled back inside by the man, Assistant police Chief Boyd Long told reporters.

Officers evacuated nearby houses and called in a SWAT team to surround the residence and prepare to forcibly enter if necessary, Brown said.

A heavily armed and armored SWAT team eventually stormed the home about 3:30 p.m. and discovered the bodies.
