SAN DIEGO -
It was certainly no holiday for firefighters battling a blaze in Logan Heights that burned part of a church and an adjoining home. Firefighters were called to the 900 block of South 30th Street around 9:45 a.m. Thursday. They had the blaze put out about 45 minutes later. Investigators say something was placed too close to the water heater inside the church office and that sparked the blaze which caused $140,000 worth of damage.
Members of the Iglesia Pentecostal Church said they had planned to have a special service Thursday afternoon complete with potluck dinner.
"Just reunite and be thankful for everything," explained church member Marco Gonzalez. "It was a big hit so we weren't expecting anything like this."
Church goers will now have to regroup. San Diego Fire –Rescue Deputy Chief Perry Peak said the fire started in the office of the church and spread into the attic of the residence. He said it became a two alarm fire as a precaution.
"Because we have four structures that are actually butted up against each other we didn't want to take any chances on an additional fire spread," said Peak.
Peak said both the church and the residence sustained fire damage but are salvageable. The sanctuary of the church incurred very little damage.
"Their instruments, the pulpit all that stuff is in good shape," said Peak of the sanctuary.
Peak said the pastor of the church told him no one had been in the office since 10 p.m. the night before so it appeared no one was there when the fire started. The Red Cross is working with the displaced family to get them temporary shelter and food and clothing.
