SAN MARCOS, Calif. -- A man who allegedly bit a deputy during a destructive rampage at a North County supermarket Wednesday was arrested on suspicion of felony battery.
The disturbance at the Albertsons store in the 1900 block of West Marcos Boulevard was reported shortly after 8:30 a.m., sheriff's Lt. Jeff Maxin said.
Deputies arrived to find that a man had gotten out of his wheelchair inside the business and was crawling around on the floor, shouting at customers, breaking bottles and knocking over merchandise displays, according to Maxin.
Initially, the irate man calmed down somewhat and cooperated with the patrol personnel. After speaking with them for about 15 minutes, however, he suddenly became combative and bit one of them on the leg with a "pretty good'' amount of force, the lieutenant said.
After subduing the man, the deputies arrested him, then took him to Tri- City Medical Center in Oceanside for an evaluation. The suspect, whose name was not immediately available, appeared uninjured, according to Maxin.
The bitten patrolman received treatment for his wound at an urgent-care facility.
It was unclear what prompted the violent outburst, Maxin said.
