SAN DIEGO - High winds blew across the county Wednesday.

It was a scary morning for a couple in North County. They escaped serious injury when a large eucalyptus tree toppled onto their car as they were making their way along the 900 block of Rancheros Drive in San Marcos. Emergency crew had to free the elderly couple from their smashed vehicle. The man was taken to a local hospital for a precautionary evaluation.

Around 2:30 in the afternoon, another large tree fell onto a busy road in University City. The tree blocked four lanes of La Jolla Village drive, directly across the street from the UTC Mall. Traffic was backed up all the way to the 805 freeway.

At Mission Beach, the entire coastline was deserted. Thousands of people usually pack the area, but rough surf conditions and sand whipping people in the face convinced many people to stay away.
