Movies can refer to motion pictures, the art form of making a film or the motion picture industry. Films are made by recording images of actors and scenery using cameras, animation techniques and special effects. In the late 1900s, computers became a key resource for making a movie. Films are made up of a series of individual images called frames. Silent, black-and-white movies were made as far back at the late 1800s. In the 1920s, films in the United States flourished with the rise of Hollywood, in southern California. Films, featuring "movie stars," are distributed by movie studios, which are large production companies. Movie reviews, written by film critics, appear regularly via numerous media outlets and can have a major effect on the success of a film and how much money is made. « Show less

  1. Men in Black 3

I had a weird thing happen when attempting to review this movie. The studios did a screening that was at a time late in the afternoon. I couldn’t attend on time. So I caught the last 40 minutes and had mixed feelings. I then did my review on TV, where I was lukewarm on it. That night, I caught another screening and wow…I was impressed by the first hour I had missed.

  3. What to Expecting When You're Expecting

I might lose my man card saying this but…Cameron Diaz rarely looks appealing on screen. She was cute and fun in There’s Something About Mary and okay in Vanilla Sky. I can’t think of anything else I’ve liked her in.

  5. Battleship

Mr. Board was bored watching a movie based on a board game. Although I think it’s false to keep stating in reviews and press releases that this is based on the Hasboro game. It’s an alien invasion film with battleships. Other than missiles shaped similar to the game pieces, this has nothing to do with the game; unless my memory from playing it with my brother 30 years ago is wrong. We’d merely yell out “F8,” and we’d hear “hit” or “miss.”

  7. Dark Shadows

In my opinion, Tim Burton is the worst director making money in Hollywood. And it’s not like things are going to change. He likes to remake stuff, and he puts Johnny Depp in it. This means the films make millions and millions. Why would anything change?

  9. Headhunters

Two of my favorite movies of the year are playing right now at the Hillcrest Landmark. One of those is Sound of my Voice. The other is this crime drama that reminds me of a Coen Brothers film like Blood Simple or No Country for Old Men – except that it’s better.

It’s like The Golden Girls if done by Merchant-Ivory.

It’s like The Golden Girls if done by Merchant-Ivory. Okay, it’s not that bad. Sure, a lot of the script feels like it’s a TV sitcom, and hey…it was written by a TV writer. The steller British cast includes Tom Wilkinson (who...

  13. The Five-Year Engagement

I don’t mind a comedy going for two hours but when a lot of it isn’t working, I start to wonder why they didn’t just cut 20 minutes off the thing. I often watch movies with Jason Segel wanting to punch his face. I’m not sure why.

  15. The Raven

When I hear about an actor being cast to play somebody famous, I never really analyze it before seeing the movie. I didn’t think Jim Carey looked anything like Andy Kaufman, and he was great (and somehow got robbed of an Oscar nomination). Val Kilmer was great as the dark singer/poet Jim Morrison (in the horrible movie).

It irked me that last year Martha Marcy May Marlene got so much critical praise. It was an uninteresting movie about cults, with two good performances (John Hawkes, Elisabeth Olsen).

What do you get when you take the director (Joss Whedon) best known for Buffy the Vampire Slayer – and you give him $220 million to make a movie? Oh, and he’s seen Transformers, because there’s a lot of stuff that looks like it was taken straight out of that.
