Interstate 4

Highlights
Interstate 4

The 132-mile-long highway connects Tampa on the Gulf Coast to Daytona Beach on Florida's east coast. The first segment of what would become I-4 opened between Plant City and Lakeland in 1959. In 1963, Mickey Mouse-creator Walt Disney flew over Central Florida on a scouting trip for his new theme park and glimpsed a large stretch of undeveloped land where I-4 crossed Florida's Turnpike. Although I-4 is considered an east-west highway, in the Orlando area it mostly runs north-south. The interstate crosses the St. Johns River at Mile 104, near Lake Monroe and the Central Florida Zoo in Sanford. Thanks to I-4 and urban sprawl, the Orlando area annually ranks in the Top 10 for most congested traffic systems in the country. About 200,000 cars a day travel through Orlando on I-4. Three out of every 10 cars currently using I-4 are driven by tourists. Six out of 10 by commuters. Local planners hope a proposed commuter-rail system running from Volusia County to Osceola County to help relieve traffic.  « Show less
